The visual work of Miss Perry

These days, the pop industry is full of shallow performers. That is a fact that we can long discuss with friends or experts on the subject, but is also true that some of them stands up for sharing a lot more than party, neon lights and empty lyrics, and that place is where Katy Perry has been standing up for a long time, but not certainly about their music quality (it is still commercial pop), but their visual work always made a high point on her career. That is the point I wanna talk about, because Katy Parry basically knows how to express their opinion, how to guide the crew she had been working with and how to make beautiful videos with intelligent shots and edition.

In the first place, she knows how to express her opinion. In every videoclip she works around a concept, sometimes more meaningful and sometimes a basic one, but always making a good job. Two examples for that are, in one hand, “Last Friday Night”, which video talks about how a nerdy-look girl takes the night with the help of her neighbor, and party on all night. On the other hand, we got “Chained to the rhythm”, which video is clearly a criticism about how the massmedia are controlling the life of the people, and alienates them into the utopic idea of a perfect world and the American Dream. Both wonderful videos which represents that she has always been able to talk about what she wants, and that is something that we realize through the years.

Also, Miss Perry has been constant to make videos that are very similar on their aesthetic, and that is because she knows how to guide her crew to make her ideas reality. She always picks the option to tell a story, and that is not a minor detail, because she stands for transform the simple format of videoclips to make a hybrid with short films. We can see this, for example on “The One That Got Away” which tells a story about an old lady who can’t overcome the loss of her true love at her adolescence time. Tragic but beautiful video, where we can see the adolescent and the old-year-old Perry on a parallel montage.

Finally, we can see that in her videos she really cares about good results at photography and montage. In a lot of sequences, we can’t always find that one frame we can fall in love with, because there are a lot of them. I love how was the result of “Thinking of You”, which tells a story about a woman which military boyfriend went to war and dies because of that. We can suffer the whole video with her lonely and hopelessly idea to see her loved-one again. I mean, in another industry videos we can see how desperate are people to make things fast, but Katy really cares to launch singles and dedicate time to make a good work for each one.

The visual work of Perry is amazing so far. Being listened and stands up for social causes these days are a very important achievement, but I hope she can be critical about society more often. She has a big power with her, and that is the power of share a message and being listened by the world. She is a speaker, and besides their industry obligations she can still give meaningful messages to the world. Take an eye on her, because she is not as shallow as everyone else.

Miss Perry realizing that she can make her decitions on her own, on "Chained to the Rhythm" music video.
